The short answer

A Jordanian trademark registration lasts 10 years from its registration date and can be renewed for further 10-year periods. If it is not renewed, it is treated as cancelled one year after the renewal due date, and a third party may apply for it a year after that. Anyone can file an objection within 3 months of publication, and a mark can be cancelled for 3 years of non-use.

These rules come from the Trademarks Law No. 33 of 1952, in the English text on WIPO Lex as amended up to Law No. 15 of 2008. Later changes and the implementing regulations can affect fees and forms, so we confirm the current rules with the Registrar before filing.

QuestionAnswer
How long does a trademark last?10 years from the registration date, renewable for 10-year periods (Article 20).
Which date does the term count from? The registration date. Under Article 15 the mark is registered as from the date of the application, so for a normal filing the 10 years run from the filing date.
When can I renew? The Registrar renews the registration on the owner's request (Article 21(1)). File before the renewal due date. The Law does not fix a longer advance window, so we diarise the date from the certificate.
Is there a grace period?Yes, in effect. If the owner does not renew, the registration is treated as cancelled from the register after one year from the renewal due date, and a third party may apply for the mark one further year later. The former owner can re-apply at any time unless a third party has registered it (Article 21(2) and (3)).
Opposition periodAny person may file a written objection with the Registrar within 3 months from the publication of the application, or any other prescribed time. The Registrar sends the objection to the applicant, who must file a counter-statement or is treated as abandoning the application (Article 14).
Reply to an office actionThe Registrar may refuse the application or accept it with conditions, and a refusal can be appealed to the High Court of Justice (Article 11(2) and (3)). If registration is not completed within 13 months of the application because of the applicant's default, the Registrar may treat the application as abandoned after written notice (Article 16).
Priority claimConvention priority of 6 months from the filing date in the home country applies where Jordan has a reciprocal agreement or convention. The registration date is then treated as the foreign filing date (Article 40).
Non-useAnyone interested can ask the Registrar to cancel a mark that its owner has not actually used continuously for 3 years before the request, unless the owner proves special trade circumstances or justifiable reasons. Use by an authorised third party counts as use, and the decision can be appealed to the High Court of Justice (Article 22).
AssignmentA trademark can be assigned or pledged with or without the business. The new owner must apply to enter title in the register, and an assignment cannot be invoked against third parties until it is recorded and published in the Official Gazette (Articles 19 and 23).
